[WSC Review Vol.21] Moguls Men’s & Ladies’ Finals FIS
Aiko Uemura conquers World Championships at home
Japan’s greatest superstar dominated the slopes to win the moguls finals that took place on the sixth day of the championships. The big crowd that gathered here was mesmerized by the drama that took place.
Aiko Uemura’s run was overwhelming. Her time for both the qualification and finals was dominant. She marked the highest score for both turns and air, marking a total of 24.71 points. She had a 1.83 point lead from Jennifer Heil (Canada), gold medalist of the Torino Olympics, who finished second. She could not fulfill her long sought wish to win the World Championship title in moguls, and finished in the same position as the previous championships. Third place was Nikola Sudova (Czech Republic). She won a medal for the first time in two championships with a steady performance.
For men’s, first and second of the World Cup standings and winning candidates of this event, Alexandre Bilodeau (Canada) and Guilbaut Colas (France) both lost control in the middle section. As if to wait in ambush, Patrick Deneen (USA) conquered the high speed survival race to win the World Championship title. Deneen has never won a World Cup, and this was no doubt a remarkable victory for him. It was a close competition for second place and under, but Tapio Luusua (Finland) placed second, and Vincent Marquis (Canada) placed third, slightly exceeding those below fourth place. They stood on the podium beaming with smiles.
